A House

Should Be A Home

Buying a house is a largely emotional process. When we look at or into a house we often like or dislike a feature without knowing exactly why.

And when all the feelings are put together, we typically like or dislike a house for a number of complex reasons that are often hard to describe clearly.

Designing a house or major addition means trying to understand all those important feelings about likes and dis-likes before there is much to actually look at. The residential architect is a person who has to find out what those feelings are and reflect them in the design of the home or addition.

Often the client comes with a patchwork of ideas and concepts that they like, but have never actually seen put together in one place. The designers experience at translating these wants, likes, dislikes and ideas into a home or addition concept is the major and critical part of the design process. To get some idea about how this is done at Architecture PLUS, click on "How We Work".

Residential architecture is generally organized into two categories:

New Homes

New homes are houses built on lots that have never been built before or have been cleared of previous construction. The house is usually single family and may or may not include detached buildings such a garages, guest houses or cabanas.

A critical part of the design process is taking best advantage of the lot shape and terrain. The lot commonly affects the design of the house. To see some examples of our new homes, click on the "New Homes" button

    Remodels

Remodeling projects involve matching new construction to the style and location of existing structures. Projects can range from pushing out a wall to rebuilding a new house on the old foundation.  In extreme cases, little may be left of the original structure.

Here the design choices are constrained by the part of the structure that is retained. Determining exactly how and where the new part will be attached, how much of the existing structure needs to be removed, and integrating traffic flows between old and new are the major design issues.
